    I'd use a single 9 volt battery for the metal detector.

    For the buggy, you need a lot of power. I'd start with a 6 volt lantern battery, they are quite powerful. If that is not fast enough, use 5 D cells in series. At 1.5 volts each, that is 7.5 volts. You can also setup a switch to change the speed, with a rotary switch selecting between 7.5 or 6 or 4.5 or 3 volts.

    If they die too quickly (I have no idea of the size of the motors) use 2 or 3 in series for each, so you have a total of 10 or 15. At this point, the weight of the batteries becomes significant.

    I don't know what you mean by "parallel circuit" ? Do you mean cells in parallel?
