Which of these kitchen improvements can you afford?

February 13, 2009 by

The kitchen is the heart of the home and when it comes to getting the most bang for your home improvement buck not much tops the work you can do in the kitchen. Here are some of the things you can focus on (small and large) to improve your house value.

1. Painting kitchen cabinets – this is a biggie. It can be expensive, although if you do the work yourself it’s much more cost effective. You can get stock cabinets or custom made ones. You could even just replace the doors or repaint them and it would still made a visual improvement.

2. Add kitchen islands – this one can be fun, but only if you have the space for it. If the middle of your kitchen isn’t big enough, or the layout just doesn’t lend itself to this, then you could also get a kitchen island cart and gain the additional storage and workspace without doing anything permanent.

3. New stainless steel kitchen sinks – your old one could have stains you don’t even know are there because you just got used to that yucky color. You can take out your sink and put in a nice new one, stainless steel is the new rage.

Overall there is great satisfaction in redoing your kitchen and these are a few of the ways you can do that. Watch for our other posts about this topic as well.

I had to do one just like this and REALLY tight. Used a pair of ultra long long nose pliers (about 12″ long tip to handle end) and grabbed the clamp with screw and worked it in then used my handy Craftsman long phillips to tighten. Took twice the time but I wasnt pulling a counter top. Make sure to mention using plumber’s putty on faucets and sink installs – saves the headaches of a rotted cabinet. Great vids Tim – your roof algae vid solved what to use – I planned on everyday bleach diluted.

I believe what the message of the thread is: Only install a sink the way the manufacturer designs it. If you’ve located a sink that’s approve for both over and under mount, then go for it.

Those big old meat tenderizer hammers work perfect for this!

Now what's this about stainless steel removing the smell??!

Good point, Jen! They would be ideal! As for stainless steel, it's supposed to be true—some sort of neutralizing chemical reaction. You can even find stainless gizmos expressly for the purpose, but if you have a stainless steel sink, just rub your hand on it next time you finish cutting garlic and see what you think!

great post mashaAllah!never thought of the ice cream one! totally tasty yet helps save the environment too…i'm all for it!!! ;) i second the baking soda one. makes for great shiny, clean tubs/sinks [esp stainless steel kitchen sinks]. here's one: use a box fan or pedestal fan placed in the window or in an open sliding door to bring in fresh cool air during spring and cooler summer days/nights. it's better than using the ac and saves on your electricity bill too, and works great in a climate like the one socal is blessed with.ummZ

Good tips I too have a full set of cutco knives. However i just wanted to clarify your comment on stainless steel. By itself it is a bad heat conductor and aluminum is a good conductor. Using both strengths what they do is put aluminum in the middle of stainless steel therefor no aluminum touches any food. Also if it is anodized then the aluminum won't react like it normally would.
