Answers:

1. Secondary syphilis ~ as characterised by typical rash and oral ulcers (not shown).
2. VDRL – for screening as well as prognostcic marker. Successful treatment should see a 4-fold-decrease in the titer within 6-12 months. A rise would indicate treatment failure, antibiotic resistance or a new exposure. TPHA or FTA-ABS for confirmation.
3. Lumbar puncture. A HIV+ person has 3x the risk of asymptomatic neurosyphilis compared to a non-HIV+ person with syphilis. CSF for VDRL is sent. The result will differentiate between secondary syphilis and tertiary syphilis and this would influence the choice of antibiotics, route of administration, and duration of therapy.

Kudos go to TFTD, iriqci, CK (though viewing of spirocheates in the CSF is not done) and Conmen who was the first to hit the jackpot!

Sensitivity test for penicillin is no longer done and has been relegated to the archives of internal medicine.

Frankly, it sounds like your mother has suffered from a variety of very real, fairly serious health problems in her lifetime. As a result, she has become somewhat hyper vigilant in noticing any bodily changes now which could indicate disease. This type of thing may actually serve her well if she is, indeed, at risk for developing other serious conditions (e.g., cancer runs in her family so she is careful to have suspicious moles checked out immediately).

This can be hard for a healthy young person to understand and to tolerate. However, from what you have described, your mother does not appear to have crossed the line into hypochondria.

Mouth ulcers(canker sores) is a condition encountered commonly. Often they are simply caused by trauma and heal quickly on their own. The recurrent, bothersome form is known as recurrent aphthous stomatitis or simply aphthous ulcers.
Blisters in the mouth are common among children and can also occur in adults.
