Using Presentation Skills And Event Management For A Succesful Conference

March 1, 2009 by

Business events can often be stressful and complex to organise, whether they are small seminars or big corporate events. A corporate event management company will help reduce a lot of the stress involved when putting on these sorts of event. An event management consultant will help you plan the event while also providing advice and recommendations when choosing venues and locations.

When organising a conference or seminar it is important to keep it simple, relevant and interesting. There are lots of ways you can do this by improving your presentation skills, so you can control and maintain the attention of your crowd or by involving the audience with hand outs, demos and media. An experienced corporate events management consultant will be able to guide you through every step from hiring the venue, hiring equipment and arranging a schedule to help run the event on the day itself.

For those of you that aren’t full of confidence when it comes to speaking in front of an audience then presentation skills training might be needed. A good consultant will either be able to provide you with a course in presentation skills training or by helpings you find someone who can. The training will tell you how to make the best use of your powerpoint skills by sticking to the main points and using prompts to remind you of what to say. Generally people take in a higher amount of information through imagery rather than text and you will find out how to use this to your advantage.

Event management is an important part of any corporate event and so it is a good idea to hire a company to take care of the management of your event. The amount of time and effort that it takes to put together a corporate event, you are better off getting someone to help with the event management. This will help you create a unique and sucessful event on any sized budget.

The first step you need to do is to decide what you want to do given the resources available, time availability and your level of interest. The key is to determine what your interests are, what you want to do, what is suitable for your lifestyle and your overall goals, and what can fit with your resources.

Dan Ramsey in his book "101 Best Home Businesses" has a chapter on how to find YOUR best home business. He suggests these 10 steps:

    1. List 5 things you do best
    2. List how others would benefit from what you do best
    3. Find out how to give people what they want
    4. Learn the value of your services to others
    5. Find out who else offers similar services
    6. Learn from the successes of others
    7. Learn from the failures of others
    8. Plan your own success
    9. Make low cost mistakes
    10. Enjoy what you do and how you do it

Once you've decided what you want to do, research everything you can about the business. Put everything together in a business plan — even though you may not be looking for a loan or investors, a business plan can help you think through what to expect in the business of your choice and how you are going to overcome the challenges

If you are starting an event management business, first step is to determine your market segment. Will you go after the social market, corporate market, non profits, regional markets, etc? Given that each market segment has different needs, your marketing strategy will vary depending on the market segment that you cater.

If you are focusing on social events catering to individuals, your pitch may be based on the premise that your services can release them from all the tasks required to create a great and worry-free event. By outsourcing the event to you, your customers can have more free time for their family and friends.

When marketing to public or private organizations, your main selling point should be greater efficiency for the money and a professional event without error. Groups, especially large ones, do not wish to deal with problems that arise due to oversight on their part. If the guarantee of worry-free, error-free events is available at a cost benefit to them, there really appears to be no better choice.

Communication skills means how you interact with people through communication. Such as, telephone, email, talking in person, making speeches, etc.

Computer skills means the things you can do by using a computer or you knowledge of computers. Such as, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Access), internet, email, typing (words per minute), clip art, graphic design, creating accounts or websites, etc.

Interests means things that you are interested in. Such as, movies, traveling, photography, spending time with family/friends, etc. If there is no hobby section, then you add those here too. The things you have listed sound good.

Objective means the goal at which you want to obtain within the job you are seeking. The one you have is okay, but you misspelled a word (utlises is spelled utilizes). If you want to be more creative, here is my suggestion of an objective: "I am seeking a part-time position that will allow me to utilize my mathematical skills, interpersonal skills, and computer skills." If you are seeking a job soley focusing on math, then just listing math skills may be okay, but all three are fine too. Also, if you know the field, you can say "….position in engineering that will….." I hope that makes sense.

And don't feel bad. I have a degree in elementary education and still looking for a full-time teaching position. I graduated in May 2009! Good luck!!!
