The Differences of Metal Roofing and Shingles

March 4, 2009 by

Michigan metal roof companies will be able to explain the pros and cons of metal roofing versus asphalt shingles to you. Eighty percent of homes in America are covered with asphalt shingles. At one time metal roofing was only used for barns and commercial buildings. However with all of the improvements in the material, the manufacturing methods and finishes this has become a very popular choice for residential roof surfaces. Especially the Victorian metal tile recreations.

When comparing metal roofing with other materials you will see that it is head and shoulders above the rest in several areas. First lets look at the life expectancy of the product. Asphalt shingles have a life of between 12 to 40 years depending on the area of the country that you live in. Metal roofs are expected to withstand the elements for anywhere from 20 to 50 years. Check with your Michigan metal roof company for warranty information on the product you select.

Over time asphalt shingles have been known to rot and have mildew issues. Where as metal roofs are resistant to these and other issues such as fire and insects.
When installing a new roof surface made from asphalt shingles, the existing surface must be removed, also known as tear off. With a metal roof it can usually be installed over your existing roof, thus eliminating additional work and clean up.

Most often the biggest disadvantage to purchasing a metal roof is the initial cost. It can be very expensive to buy and have installed. However, if you intend to live in your home for a long time you will see your investment repaid with a virtually maintenance free roof. Check with different Michigan roof companies for the best prices.

That adhesive stuff mentioned is called bitchathane $$$ Use it if you are going to install a shingled roof, three feet up from the overhang is good and install in any valleys that may be involved. Shingles hold snow on your roof, thats also known as poor man's insulation around these parts. Yes get yourself a roof rake that magic three feet up from your overhang being raked will likely be enough to get you through the winter.A metal roof is great and the cost in materials is worth it. Installing will be a bit less. BEWARE, do you have a door in a slide zone? You may wake up one morning with several feet of hard packed snow blocking your exit and shoveling it may require a metal garden spade.Welcome to New Hampshere, Live Freeze or Die.

You may lay another rubber (EPDM) roof over the old one, as long as it is sloped in the right direction for drainage, and the damaged one is still relatively flat.

I strongly suggest going to your local ABC Supply store. They are the largest supplier of exterior building products in the USA. http://www.abcsupply.com has store locations. Sales associates will provide you with everything you need to get the job done right, will teach you how to do it at the store, and will go out of their way to help you.
