Overweight and obesity are both labels for ranges of weight that are greater than what is generally considered healthy for a given height. The terms also identify ranges of weight that have been shown to increase the likelihood of certain diseases and other health problems. You can be overweight and still be relatively fit. But it depends if the extra weight you carry is muscle or fat.

It looks like she wants you to be more specific about the study, not just naming the group that conducted the study.

    Here is hers:
    1) According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
(the name of the group that conducted the study)

    2) in a report of the Surgeon General
(where the study was published or used)

    3) entitled "The Link Between Physical Activity and Morbidity and Mortality,"
    (specific title of the study)

    4) "13.5 million people have coronary heart disease," an illness that can be "prevented or improved through regular physical activity."
    (what the study found)

    Here is yours:
    1) According to the American Council of the Teaching of Foreign Languages,
(the name of the group that conducted the study)

    2) studies

    3)

    4) show that bilingualism fosters the development of verbal and spatial abilities.
    (what the studies found)

With the information that you have provided, no one can check out these "studies" for themselves. There is no way to know what studies you are referring to — they're just some anonymous "studies."

Thanks, natural cynic. I missed the fact that people with BMIs > 35 were excluded, so my use of the term “morbidly obese” (40 and above, I believe) was inappropriate; what I should have written is that those patients with the highest BMIs among those studied had a RR of cardiac death of 1.88.
If the BMI were scrapped in favor of DEXA scanning to assess true subcutaneous and intraperitoneal fat, I don't doubt that the correlations now observed between BMI and certain disease states would only be strengthened and that those areas in which the the BMI seems less applicable would be amenable to DEXA-result/disease analyses. But obviously this is not feasible.

I've already answered this question but, again, it's very interesting. It's odd that only Goten's a water sign, and the majority are air or earth.

RT There are certain Diseases that they can cure but they won’t because the money is not in the cure, it’s in the drugs and the treatment.

I think it is fair to ask where are the cures, but I think it would be silly to say that the “cons” you mention haven't changed how we look at and fund research as a public. I would like us to be pressuring our politicians to make a cure a real priority in this country. The Lance Armstrong Foundation is doing this, and it is critical that we, as young adults, also demand this. We need young adult voices to start exerting more influence on the political agendas that control research funding in this country. Grassroots fundraising efforts are extremely important, but if the people controlling the federal grants and health care systems don't believe it, then the “cure” will remain ever elusive.]]>
