Surviving the Current Financial Situation
March 3, 2010 by Tucker · 7 Comments
In the current climate of apparent worldwide economic crisis there has been a traumatic worldwide economic meltdown which has put the world economy as we know it at risk. There are many companies who will not survive but there are some who will not only survive but will benefit in these unfortunate times. For instance our business in web design has increased recently because in an effort to reduce costs companies are turning to the internet to improve sales without incurring huge overheads. So companies like ours suddenly are in greater demand. However for the majority of the population it is a question of surviving and getting through it. If your business is on a sound financial footing and you have money behind you then this will be beneficial in the coming months. You may even be able to reduce employee salaries for a period of time, rather than have lay-offs or even closing down, but whatever strategy you apply it will need to be with the agreement of the workforce because a company is dependent of the good will of its employees at such a time. During the early stages of the crisis the British company JCB, which makes big machinery like bull dozers and diggers, chose with the agreement of the workforce, to reduce everyone’s salary for 6 months rather than lay off people or go out of business.
Cash flow
Most businesses go to the wall because of problems with cash flow. If there is not enough revenue coming it to pay for goods and services then it will not be long before a company goes into liquidation. Constant monitoring of the financial position is crucial. It is so easy to spend and not realise how much is leaking out and where it is all going. Keeping a tight control on costs is always a vital activity because that is what makes or breaks a company. More profits always come from reducing outgoings whether it’s reducing waste or cheaper purchasing or decreasing the workforce. I once listened to an audio tape on how to become wealthy and the one item to impact me was the advice to plug the leaks. Most people when running short of money try to find a way of making more money, but without a balance of reducing outgoings they never seem to resolve their problem. The simple reason is that when people earn more they spend more. If you imaging a bath with the tap turned on to fill it up. If the plug is securely in place the bath will fill up fairly quickly. But if the bath was full of holes no matter how much water you pour into the bath it will never fill up. The analogy is that the bath is your bank account, the tap is your earnings and the holes are your spending. Since listening to that tape, I have made a point of keeping expenses to a minimum at home and at work and every little sum of money coming in I see as a positive step to achieving wealth. To achieve sustainable wealth it is essential to take control of your spending and plug the leaks.
Avoid buying anything unless you absolutely have to or defer some necessary purchase for a few more months if possible. It’s amazing how you can manage without something for a period of time by using up existing or old stocks and making sure that waste is reduced to an absolute minimum.
Look for Discounts in Purchasing.
When you do have to procure goods to run the business, make sure you look out for bargains or negotiate for a better deal than you may have achieved previously. When times are tough, sales with no profits are better than nothing and there are some good deals to be had. One company I recently heard about sold a house for half the price when a customer came along with a cash offer.
We were recently tasked with setting up website hosting on a seriously low budget for www.presentsmen.com and we actually managed to find a hosting company who are providing free website hosting if you buy a domain name from them. So just because you have a pre conceived idea that something has to be paid for, or costs a certain amount, it might not necessarily be the case and it is worth investigating all markets and reviewing all costs continuously.
Look for Discounts in purchasing.
By taking a good long hard look at all of the business overheads I am sure it will be easy to identify those areas similar to ours where you have large outgoings. If those costs are essential to the functioning of the business then looking for better deals with other providers or renegotiate with current provider to maybe save thousands of dollars. So in many ways the current economic climate could be seen as a good thing because it forces businesses to review their outgoings and get rid of the dead wood. In any business, the higher the outgoings, the smaller the profits. When there is an economic downturn or some loss of business unless you have unlimited capital set aside, it is vital to reduce spending otherwise the business will not survive. Most really successful businesses understand the value of controlling outgoings and constantly review costs, even when times are good.
Tighten your Belt – No need for Fancy Spending
Although looking at reducing large overheads is one way to improve the viability of your company, another is to pay attention to the small amounts going out. It is so easy to think ‘Oh it’s only a few pounds’ but small amounts add up and can so easily get out of control. Remember that old saying ‘take care of the pennies and the pounds will take care of themselves’ I think it is so true. So cut out unnecessary spending, no perks on the business such as lunches or dinners to woo customers. They rarely actually need it if your business is offering honest value for money and top class services, and in most cases customers and prospects will appreciate you being prudent if it means you stay in business and continue as their valued suppliers. Managing directors can lead the way by paying themselves less or taking a pay cut showing that they are willing to tighten their own belts.
Recently it was announced that Bruce Forsythe was taking a cut in salary for his position as the host of Strictly Come Dancing, one of the most popular programmes on TV at the moment. He believed that they were being paid too much and put his money where his mouth was.
Another major area of expense is salaries and the costs that go with them. If you employ a large number of people the overhead expenses are huge. However there is always a natural wastage where people leave or retire so without actively having to make people redundant there may be opportunities to reduce the wages bill when times are hard. Efficiency and effectiveness of the people working in the company is critical and communicating with the workforce as to how they can reduce wastage and be more effective can be a rewarding policy.
One example from my previous work in organisations was when running a supervisors workshop. One of the delegates was complaining that when he needed to order supplies he had to sent the request up the line and wait until the senior manager had given the go ahead. As he was responsible for keeping supplies stocked and felt very frustrated at the time it took for him to get the approval he needed. I was amazed to hear that he was being so hampered in doing his job properly. So when I asked the question. ‘What’s to stop you ordering the goods yourself?’ after a long think, he said it had always been done that way. Nobody had questioned the procedure and whether it was still necessary to follow it. The outcome was that the he was given the go ahead to do the ordering himself and the senior manager was freed from one task he could happily do without.
Do Your Customers have Financial Liquidity?
If one of your customers is a very large company and they are source of the majority of your revenue then you are in a high risk position. It is a good idea to ensure that you have more than one high volume customer as well as lots of smaller ones so that you will be covered if one suddenly defaults on payment.
Find out the financial viability of your best customers. When the income of a customer falls then their ability to purchase goods and services is affected. If they are able to pay, then you will be able to pay your suppliers. There is nothing worse than doing a lot of work or selling a lot of stock to customer and then not getting paid. Situations like this can often cost you money, and that is the road to financial ruin, so be sure to be aware of your client’s economic situation as best as possible. We use the free Dunn and Bradstreet financial tracking service to identify any negative changes registered against any of our major clients
One of our clients, a firm of, Nottingham town planning consultants were unfortunate enough to have one of their major clients go bust on them with an oustanding balance of about £10,000. This was a huge sum to lose. View their planning website now. They survived because their business was very healthy with positive cash flow.
Find out the financial stability of your best customers. When the income of a customer falls then their ability to buy goods and services is reduced. If they are able to pay on time, then you will be able to pay your suppliers. There is nothing worse than doing a lot of work or selling a lot of stock to customer and then not getting paid. Situations like this can often make the difference between success or failure. The cost to you in money and wasted effort and resources could be the road to financial ruin, so make sure you are aware of your client’s economic situation as much as possible. When the financial crisis happened one of our best customers suddenly switched to a two month payment plan which meant that we did not get any money from them for a month. When we protested the chief executive told his manager to find another suppler. There were a number of outstanding invoices worth thousands of pounds and we were powerless to do anything. Our overheads were compromised for that month but we were fortunate enough to have access to a reserve fund to tide us over. And yes we did get paid the whole amount over time.
Avoid Borrowing Money
When the world is in a financial crisis it is better not to borrow money if you can help it. If you have already borrowed significant sums of money then make sure you talk to your bank and get the best deal on repayments you can. If it’s possible to repay a chunk of money to reduce the interest you are paying out then do so. To me interest is money going out for nothing in return and is not good money management.
Having said all that, the interest rate in America is just over 1% and recently rates have been radically reduced in the UK. But that in itself is what caused this whole financial mess in the first place. People borrow money cheaply then re-lend it at a higher rate of interest and take the difference in profit. Once the interest rate rises to a more normal level they will bail out and take their billions off to buy an island somewhere while everyone else pays the price. I know that is an over simplification of the problem, but it serves to demonstrate that the greed of a few has caused the distress of millions of the majority.
In my property rental business, a few years ago I had to let a house at a reduced rent but found a good long term tenant. This meant that the income was only just covering my costs but subsequently, because of the drop in interest rates, the mortgage repayments on the property have been reduced by £150 a month. This means I have been able to realise a small profit and with that money I am reinvesting it in improvements to the house. Long term I see it as a good investment to maintain the standard and value of the property. So for some companies who have had to borrow money to stay afloat there is the benefit of lower interest rates to reduce the burden of repayments.
You Only Have to Make it Through
The world economic situation is currently, I realise, much more complicated than we are suggesting above. Although it is true that the simple way of managing crisis is often the best solution. If you cut everything back to the bone and try to recreate the days when people did not have such complex lives, it can allow you to get on top of a situation. Years ago people used to manage their company without armies of specialists to provide tax advice, many coped without water coolers and other such luxuries such as cleaning services and people who come round every few weeks to disinfect the telephones! they coped through carrying out extra work on their own when required or they just went without. As your company regains its footing, or recovers, it probably won’t make commercial sense to sit and trawl through your business accounts doing book keeping yourself or to have to do a lot of extra research and administration, so you can restore those facilities that help to make you more money once the business has recovered.
Now I am not suggesting that we should go back to the good old days. What I am saying is that we might think we can’t manage without all our gimmicks such as mobile phones that take photos, but the reality is that we can do more with a great deal less, as long as we put ourselves into the right frame of mind and think positively about what we can achieve rather than what we haven’t got. Obviously as your business grows, or recovers, it doesn’t become economically viable to sit and trawl through tax return forms or to have to do a lot of extra research and administration yourself, so you can reintroduce those facilities as and when you have recovered your financial equilibrium.
Think what the Victorians did with the limited resources they had at their disposal. The horse was the main mode of transport and they used the manure to heat cold- frames and managed to grow pineapples without any other form of heating. They did not have cars, computers, mobile phones or even phones. The railway was only just coming into being, and they did not even have electricity. But with their energy and ingenuity they conquered the world. The industrial revolution with their steam driven engines changed our economy for ever. In the past there was no such thing as ecommerce web design and yet businesses survived|thrived.
Stay in a Positive Mode
By this I do not mean be in denial and pretend the world is not going through a financial challenging time. But if you are continually thinking and worrying about the negative aspects of the financial situation, then you are likely to make it come true. Don’t forget you get what you wish for and by concentrating on something then it will work like a wish, so why not concentrate on ways of getting new customers, giving better value to your existing customers and how your company could offer new products or services to your existing customer base?
Conclusion
Although during this recession there is no doubt times are hard for people who have lost their work. No work, equals no money coming in, so how do people pay their bills and their mortgages? If consumers have been prudent during times of prosperity and they have a nest egg for a rainy day, then they can probably manage for a few months until they get another job. But if they are already up to their eyes in debt then they will face personal bankruptcy and could lose everything.
In spite of all that, some people are managing quite well if they have jobs or some other type of income. One article I read recently said that the death rate reduced noticeably during recession and put that down to eating more economically at home and not eating so much junk food. So OK we can’t afford to go out for meals as much, and things are more expensive, but home prepared food is often better for you and sharing meals with the family is a way of coming together and communicating. So it’s not all bad. Good luck for a prosperous future.

How to Find a Good Driving School
February 2, 2010 by Tucker · 6 Comments
Reaching the ag of 17 in the UK entitles you to start driving. The cost of driving lessons are not cheap (but absolutely necessary), so you will want to ensure this money is wisely spent. Firstly, you will need to identify some local driving schools and ask suitable questions of them.
There are lots of directories on the internet specialising in listing driver training schools of all types. I located one that listed thousands of local driving schools throughout the UK so you will surely find some driving instructors that may or may not be suitable for you.
When you contact the driving instructors, you will want to be certain that they are fully qualified and not still training to be a driving instructor. You can tell this by the type of licence they hold which, must be displayed in the window of their training vehicle. A fully qualified driving instructor will have a green octagonal licence whereas a trainee will have a pink triangular licence.
Many driving instructors will offer you a discount on the price of your driving lessons by paying for more than one in advance. Some will also offer discounts based on your profession e.g. nurses, students etc. Be sure that you enquire about any possible discounts.
You do need to realise though that cheapest lessons are not always the best driving lessons and you could well end up taking far more driving lessons than you actually need thereby being more expensive overall. So, once you start your driver training, if for whatever reason you are not happy with your instructor, do not be afraid to try out another local driving school.
Some of these reasons could be a personality clash, shouting, turning up late, using the lesson time to stop off at shops/do errands, stopping to use their mobile (illegal whilst driving), a dirty (smelly!) car etc.
Let us not forget that you are the customer and spending your hard earned money and should therefore receive and expect a top level of courtesy, service and training.
When Would you Plan That Yearly Getaway To Be?

When you desire to go on an awesome holiday, it must be to Port Vila Vanuatu. It is a great holiday getaway and you get all the fun that any person could look for in a good break out of your everyday life. The Melanesian community is super friendly and Vanuatu was in recent times voted the most friendly country on the planet. Now that is a perfect award to win.
Port Vila is the capital in Vanuatu. They won independance from France and England in 1980 and improved name from New Hebrides to Vanuatu. There used to be 1, 000, 000 native Melanesians here but now the numbers are greatly reduced to 200, 000. Presently Vanuatu heavily relies on tourism to keep their civilization alive. The joint agreement among France and England made Vanuatu a calm location considering the mighty rivalry that has existed between those European nations in the past.
Annually, more than 60, 000 holiday-makers travel to vanuatu as a vacation destination. Considering the population of Vanuatu is not much greater than that, it is an excellent feat. Port Vila has only 30, 000 citizens and their friendliness compensates for the small amounts. We chose this as a getaway for our Aussie Internet Marketing getaway to rehearse our social media ability and meet likeminded people. It definitely is a perfect position for that.
The Pacific island are very favorable and are a must go place for everybody considering a tropical holiday away from the western world. When vanuatu got voted the friendliest country on the earth, they surely deserved the title. They beam from ear to ear and are always able to please.
Bear in mind a Vanuatu Holiday for your next getaway. I have traveled there twofold, the scuba diving is good and the thrills are plenty. Enjoy your next vacation in Melanesia.
Riding a Perfect Wave
January 17, 2010 by Tucker · 9 Comments
Fans of water sports keep surfing at the top of their lists merely as a result of gliding on the waters surface and within the waves looks and feels unbelievably enchanting. Surfing isn’t exclusively tied to the sea because it will be worn out rivers as well. Surfing was a vital half of Hawaiian culture where the chief was the foremost capable surfer with the most effective surfboard, that represented the verification of his authority. Europeans noticed this ability in 1767 and several wrote regarding it as one thing that impressed them greatly.
There are several sorts of surfing like: body boarding – where the person is riding the wave solely partially raising the upper body from the board, and bodysurfing – when no board is employed, and normal surfing that’s divided into long and short boarding. The distinction is in the planning of surfboards and the fashion of surfing. Surfboards are made of polyurethane foam or fiberglass. Their length is regarding 3 meters and the weight varies in step with the load of the individual surfer.
Ideal surf conditions are off shore winds of medium strength that create waves known as tubes. A breathtaking image is unquestionably when a surfer glides within the wave tunnel touching the wall of water with their fingers before exiting to without falling of their board. Experienced surfers apprehend precisely which wave to ride and many pay hours in the water anticipating the proper wave.
They have help in the form of forecasting technology that uses mathematical graphical models to see the scale and direction of swells around the planet. Swells alternate throughout the year. During winter, they are created on the west coasts and in summer in tropical areas where their movements are unpredictable. Swells last for some days and surfers that rummage around for the most effective waves typically travel around the world to catch them.
Many surfers do it for recreational purpose solely whereas others are completely dedicated to it. In America surfing could be a means of life i California, Florida and Hawaii. Today surfing represents a multi-billion dollar business concerning equipment and clothing. Surfing skills lie in the power to regulate the surfboard in varied conditions and in the ability to perform varied maneuvers.
It’s a very dangerous sport as a result of inexperienced surfers will easily be taken down by waves and if their coordination is not smart, they will drown. There is risk of hitting rocks, sand bars or alternative surfers. Depending on that half of the globe surfing takes place there is conjointly a danger from sharks, jellyfish and stingrays.

No Fax No Teletrack Payday Loans
January 10, 2010 by Tucker · 9 Comments
I’m sure that you have heard all those commercials about getting payday loans to cover unexpected expenses. You see the commercials you hear all the hype about them. The truth is they can be a awfully good thing, but you have got to do some research of your own before doing. There are many rules and conditions with these pay-day loans. Get a Cash Advance
we all know the pay-day loans are used to cover astonishing expenses with a particularly short term loan, usually till their next pay-day. They’re often called a pay day or paycheck advance. The pay day Loans US regulations usually terribly from one state to another. Different countries have different regulations also. Most states have boundaries on the amount that you can borrow. They also have the legal right to charge any APR. The bank has got the right to select what it’s going to be. Most states impose very little restraints on what the APR can be set at. Fast Cash Loan No Credit Check
As you research these loans, you’ll find the secured and non- secured loans are opposite in some areas aside from needing or not needing assets to obtain the loan. You may find payday loans for the unwaged are offered at higher interest rates. Though, with some work, you must be able to find firms that are supplying more reasonable rates than others. The quantity of money that one is able to borrow is usually less with a non- secured loan, and the repayment time is shorter. You must weigh the benefits and disadvantages with each option and chose the one that fits your situation.
The process of getting the loan is frequently a bit difficult to. In the case of a retail lending loan, the one wanting to borrow goes to the lending store and typically gets a small amount cash loan. The stipulations on these kinds of loans are usually just the loan, plus interest, has to be paid back with your next paycheck.
The yearly percentage rates on these payday loans can be enormous. They usually range from 390% to 780%! To end the deal, the borrower gives the lender a post dated check for the whole amount, plus interest, and the lender can cash that check on the next business day of the borrowers paycheck.
There’s also Internet lending where the candidate fills out an application on the web. They have to provide all of their personal info before the application will be authorized. They require a recent bank record with copies of all of the proper documentation signed and correct. Then once the application is authorized, the lender will deposit the amount approved into the account given by the borrower. The lender then receives the cash, and interest, back electronically the day following they receive their paycheck.
According to state laws, charging any other fees for this, apart from what’s required by law, is proscribed. Some states even regulate the number of loans to a single borrower in a certain time frame. The lender must carry out verification before they can lend. They can not lend to somebody that will not repay it. They also require that someone not take out one loan to repay another.
The pay-day Loans US laws are handled individually by each state. Some states consider these payday loans to be against the law. Only 30 7 states permit these types of establishments. If the places aren’t banned all together they have huge regulations like not allowing unreasonable APR’s. Most of the states now have a defined fixed amount in which the APR can not increase over. They also require that the loan fees are added into the set interest.
The thing to remember is to focus on what the laws are in your state. Do not let someone take advantage of you or your present position. Arm yourself with knowledge first!
There are few things worse, in life, than a financial crisis. In this economy, it’s not surprising to hear of financial struggles. Many of us could find themselves jobless and nervous about having the ability to make ends meet. If you, yourself, are going through a stressful situation of this kind, you maybe inquisitive about payday loans for the unwaged. Yes, there are banks that will help those that are presently jobless. Available to the borrower are two differing types of loans. The first being a secured loan and the other, a non- secured loan. One must research the different types of loans to decide which one will fit their situation.
A secured loan can be obtained from many institutions. Secured implies that the borrower has assets that they are ready to ‘put up’ as collateral to get the loan. This type of loan will often let you borrow more money at a lower IR, over a longer period of time. A secured loan may take longer to get and appears harder to reach. While on the other hand, the non- secured loan means just what it is saying. These are the pay-day loans for the unemployed. There are no assets needed for this kind of loan. But it does come with other concerns and wants.
This option does have some great advantages for somebody that’s in need of money, fast. The application its self, for payday loans for the jobless, is straightforward and can be done completely on the web. And if all goes well and you are approved, you may have money deposited in to your deposit account inside 20 four hours. You are able to apply on the Internet, filling out an application that ask for all of your important information. Some of the strict requirements include ; you must be at least eighteen years old, must have an active deposit account that’s at least a quarter old, have a current address that you have lived at for a minimum of one year and be a current resident of the UK.
How To Avoid Software Licensing Non Compliance
December 9, 2009 by Tucker · 11 Comments
Introduction
The world has changed over the last twenty five years out of all recognition. With the opening up of the World-Wide-Web there has been a massive revolution in communications and the way in which populations manage their lives. However with the introduction of computers and databases, banking on line and free exchange of information throughout the world, there is also the criminal aspect to go with it. The virus and hacking into sensitive sites is a goldmine of opportunity for people intent on fraud and illegal activities. So naturally there is a neced for the public to be protected and have total security so that they can use the facilities without harm. Such Website security and email protection systems have now become big business. As companies become more acutely aware of the dangers and risks of illegal activities they are investing in security solution technology to do something about it.
Software Security
One such company has combined the provision of secure networks, data and applications with the processes and technology involved in making sure that data is managed effectively. The service includes ensuring that bottlenecks are minimised on the network and speed is maximised; minimising data destruction and loss of productivity from spam and browsing that contravenes corporate policy and helping organisations use the technology to uphold corporate policies and comply with regulatory needs.
During these financially challenging times you would expect companies to be economising on computer hardware and software, but instead many organisations have gone ahead investing in IT as a way of restructuring their businesses to create opportunities, thereby gaining competitive advantage. I have a theory that downturn in business is generating more illegal activity so there is more need for security technology and some companies are benefiting as a result. Every cloud has a silver lining.
The Modern World of Software Licensing
As the recession continues to bite many companies do have had to cut costs resulting in less to spend on IT and unfortunately there have been a number of bankruptcies, but that does not tell the whole story. More recently as the IT business grows ever more gigantic, the management of all the software and monitoring of all the licensing of software is becoming a minefield. For a large organisation where everything is run on computers with its associated software, the cost in licences is huge. There has been a fair bit of news recently about how much it has cost for UK and European businesses to bring their software licensing up to date as a result of a software audit. It seems that the federation against software theft (FAST) claim they can audit any company as they see fit. The cost of just having to reconcile license fees could tip the balance and financially cripple a business. What with the security costs of protecting your computer systems and the licensing fees and keeping up to date with new ideas, large organisations can find their IT costs spiralling out of control.
And you thought licensing your software in a physical environment was complicated, well the game has changed! Over the last three years, there has been an increasingly widespread adoption of x86 server virtualisation which has significantly changed the information technology landscape. No longer is a server workload tied to the underlying hardware as more than one workload can run on a single box. This has quite astonishing benefits in terms of high availability and disaster recovery, not to mention significant cost savings from the reduction in hardware requirements. The automatic inventory of hardware and software delivers a realistic snapshot of the IT infrastructure and provides, among other things, a reliable data pool for license management, allowing any company to dramatically optimise its license situation.
With malware increasing in both volume and sophistication and no anticipated slow down in sight, we believe it is now more important than ever for companies to have a comprehensive web security solution in place. Over the years it has been shown that service delivery models and benefits vary greatly and that tight integration of services at the provider level is critical. In the case of e-mail this means security, archiving, continuity and policy management.
The type of security software we are all familiar with is the firewall on our computers and web and email monitoring to identify potential threats.
Some Interesting Facts Have Emerged:
Although most IT directors would claim to know exactly how many PCs they have on their network, the reality is that more than two-thirds of organisations have a discrepancy of up to 30% between expected and actual inventories. This discrepancy poses obvious problems. How can businesses accurately budget and plan if they don’t know what they already have, and indeed out of what they do own, what is actually in use? In theory the idea of effective Software Asset Management is that organisations can manage IT assets in order to support business goals, enabling cost controls, strengthen security and improve corporate governance, all while minimising risk. Keeping track of the hardware in a large organisation is very time consuming, but then doing the same for all the licensing of software for each piece of hardware can be near impossible.
SAM and Virtualisation
Traditionally, licenses have been allocated to the physical hardware on which the relevant software is running. With the increased demand on budgets IT departments are looking for ways of reducing| shrinking| cutting} costs. Organisations have recognised for some time now that their internal data centres are extremely inefficient and have looked for more efficient approaches to give them better control over their applications and service levels, while having increased choice in the way they support their operations. Reducing cost is one of the key drivers behind virtualisation, a technology which is having a truly transformative effect on the IT landscape. There is both a growing realisation and an acceptance that the economic viability of virtualisation and cloud computing in one form or another, will represent the next big transformation in corporate computing. The expectations are huge; banking analysts say that cloud computing will be a $160 billion market within the next five years, and every major IT company is jumping on the bandwagon.
Whilst there have been concerns expressed around complexity, and “how to get started” these are becoming dispelled, as many organisations specialising in SAM, such as Softcat, have educated clients on the process and priorities and how to make it economical. According to the analyst firm Gartner, SAM helps organisations save up to 30 % of their IT budget, so it is little wonder that it’s rapidly rising up the Chief Information Officer’s (CIO’s) agenda, despite the concerns around complexity.
One example of saving on costs is where the Telegraph Media Group bought in an effective SAM strategy which helped the company gain complete control of their IT assets attaining savings of £100,000 from over expenditure on unnecessary licenses. Although initially the senior managers need to be aware of the whole SAM process, there are some aspects, such as discovery and license management, that are quick and simple to implement and can deliver a much more immediate business and financial impact: lower costs, greater security, decreased risk and improved corporate governance. These initial steps will also set organisations on the road to achieving full ISO 19770-1 compliance when the time is right.Space is at an all time premium, electricity bills ever increasing, budgets shrinking, and while virtualisation is helping us fit more servers into a limited space it does not necessarily mean that the storage solutions being used are any better provisioned or utilised to their full capacity.
The vast majority of our customers pay a lot of attention to licence compliance to ensure they only deploy legal software. Alongside the constant and rising threat of audits from vendors and regulatory bodies, some vendors are taking action to recognise these efforts being made by customers – such as: simplifying license programmes, free education and raising the ethical argument to the physical users of using non licensed products. There are free tools and licence statements to help get an precise picture of customer’s Microsoft software assets or, specialist SAM partners are available as part of the programme, to engage with customers and work through the process. The term software solutions is just the industry jargon for the operating system that allows your computer to do what you want it to do.
The Future Trends in Computing.
Under increasing pressure to deliver superior results for less cost, IT managers are considering new options to maintain the functionality of their critical resources such as e-mail management and web security. One of the latest ideas to emerge is that of cloud computing. This term describes any scenario where computing resources are accessed over the Internet and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) makes up one of the largest elements of cloud computing. The SaaS vendors provide a service where the customer does not pay for the software itself, but rather for using it. This takes care of the complexity of licensing and asset management for the IT department allowing the company to concentrate on their contractual work. The process of cloud computing helps customers to reduce the cost and complexity of web and e-mail management and security, so they can focus on their core business by eliminating unnecessary distractions.
Some compare the cloud computing revolution to that of electricity a hundred years ago when companies stopped generating their own power and plugged into the newly built electrical grid. It was more economical to outsource the production of electricity leaving the companies to focus on their core operations. Today a similar revolution is underway. Hooking up to the Internet’s global computing grid, massive information-processing plants are pumping into our businesses and homes. This shift is already reinventing the computer industry. The heavily publicised topics of the increased activity around all things “virtualised” and companies being audited, Software Asset Management (SAM) is becoming a key talking point of the latest products and services available.
Cloud computing models will prevail with Software as a Service (SaaS) along with Platform as a Service. I believe hosting companies will be at the cutting edge of this evolution and will lead to industries becoming more service based. This will range from mobile/GPS/PRS hand held services, consumer services, services targeted at SMBs. We see this as a massive market as these guys don’t want to invest in their own technology per-se, they just want a service. Large enterprises are already embracing cloud computing and it is having a significant impact, as a way to manage their costs and deliver services to both their external customers and internal employees. In fact this move to a hosted delivery model, where the technology or application is simply made available when and where you need it, will drive a new market. We won’t be talking about Software as a Service; or Hardware as a Service… soon we’ll have a new definition – Everything as a Service.
Analyst firm, Gartner agrees that some of the biggest benefits of clouds computing “are the built-in elasticity and scalability, which not only reduce barriers to entry, but also enable these companies to grow quickly.” In the case of ScanSafe, modifications can be made from a web interface from anywhere in the world and alterations are made active in seconds. Furthermore, an SLA provides a financially backed guarantee about service availability and effectiveness. Embrace storage resource management solutions, commit to thin provisioning, actively employ duplication and start using intelligent archiving you will not only save money, time, and reduced your company’s environmental footprint, you will have taken your challenges head on, controlled them and overcome them.
The ability to utilise applications such as web security on a pay-as-you-go basis will be a perfect strategy for businesses seeking greater flexibility and control over costs. According to global market intelligence firm, IDC, “The cloud model offers a much cheaper way for businesses to acquire and use IT – in an economic downturn, the appeal of that cost advantage will be greatly magnified. More and more of the focus now is moving to service based models, and managing OP-EX (Operational Expenditure), whereas discussions previously were focussed on CAP-EX (Capital Expenditure). This argument is even truer in today’s economy.
What’s New in Microsoft?
Microsoft has announced the launch of the next wave of Microsoft Office and related products. At a time when an organisation requires its communication tools to be cost-effective and flexible, Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 is able to achieve new levels of reliability and performance by delivering features that simplify your administration, help protect your communications, and with greater business mobility. Exchange 2010 delivers new, integrated e-mail archiving functionality-including granular multi-mailbox search, item-level retention policies and instant legal hold-making it easier to address compliance and discovery issues. Administrators get centralised control of all archives while users get direct access to their archived mail, including a familiar archive experience that does not disrupt the way they manage their inboxes every day. Exchange Server 2010 actively helps protect your communications through built-in defences against viruses and junk e-mail and support for an array of third party security products.
The latest advances in Microsoft software is revolutionising the IT industry in the same way the invention of the wheel changed the world. The pressure to optimise your IT infrastructure for ever-changing business conditions requires you to be agile and that means investing in solutions that provide you and your organisation with options.
Microsoft Exchange, enables rich and productive collaboration among its users and can help achieve better business outcomes while controlling the costs of deployment, administration and compliance. The latest release of Exchange 2010 delivers the widest range of deployment options, integrated information leakage protection, and advanced compliance capabilities, that combine to form the best messaging and collaboration solution available in a simplified way to help keep e-mail continuously available for the user. With new deployment and storage options, enhanced inbox management capabilities and e-mail archiving built-in, Exchange 2010 helps you lower costs and enhance business outcomes.
Allied to cloud computing, Virtual Desktop Infrastructure is another area where a model is emerging that has enough advantages to become main-stream. VDI will cause a fundamental rethink for Microsoft in terms of its operating licensing system. The current licensing model, where device and software license were inexorably tied together, in years to come won’t be the case and Microsoft is already adapting to accommodate the new concepts. The ability to provide a unified service eliminates the need for multiple interfaces, reporting and policy management – therefore reducing management workload.
Licensing the Virtual Environment
If the link between software and hardware is broken, that model doesn’t work. To their credit, the software vendors, led by Microsoft, have recently started to make changes to their licensing models to match the abilities of the technology – however, whilst these changes are on balance positive, the complexity of licensing in a virtual environment is dramatically increased. Our training deck for the SAM Team on virtual licensing runs to 35 slides – something you don’t ever want to be subjected to unless you suffer from insomnia! Intel technologies are continually addressing the complete business needs of the market and Virtualisation is a constant theme. With the recent launch of their Xeon 5500 design of server chips, it is possible to have intelligent power management that can deliver a 90% reduction in energy costs compared with servers of just five years ago. (and not just making chips go faster!)
Softcat have always maintained that good financial stewardship of software assets has the same result – and this is even more crucial in a virtual environment. We can help you make the most of the licensing terms available – did you know that licensing a server for Windows Datacentre Edition allows you to run unlimited virtual Windows Servers? – and of course ensure that you are adhering to the terms of the licensing agreement, which is critical to ensure compliance. Microsoft is certifying customers for a whole 12 months after their SAM engagement and ring fencing them from further investigation. Microsoft wants to encourage and support its customers to integrate SAM in their everyday planning and control – working with them to maximise their software investment.
SAM Vendor Programmes
A number of associate vendor partners have instigated SAM accreditation programmes and are taking a more “in partnership” approach, where their intentions are to help and reward customers for engaging in SAM. Microsoft have pioneered this sort of programme, along with the likes of Adobe, and Symantec have also launched accreditations to guarantee end user customers they are in safe hands, when engaging with such resellers. The point here is that the vendors want to encourage customers, rather than the previous stance of enforcement. Finally, worth a note with regard to e-mail management, there is the added burden of efficient and effective retrieval and legislative compliance that service providers are able to lighten.
Conclusion
It is amazing how fast technology has evolved over the decades to drive our lives from every angle personal and business. Two extremely hot topics of the last year, have without doubt, been Software Asset Management (SAM) and Virtualisation. The fact is that organisations the world over are analysing their processes and costs to see how they can work smarter. The economic slowdown could be said to have a positive effect as it pushes| forces| nudges companies towards the process of change thereby accelerating the change. With the increased demand on budgets, coupled with the increased activity around all things “virtualised”, these remain two of the most heavily publicised topics and Softcat believes the business case for cloud computing is a compelling one and that certain non-core business functions, that are nonetheless necessary, are best done in the cloud, being more cost effective for the business and, in many cases, provide the most efficient service.
Learning to Drive: Manual or Automatic?
December 4, 2009 by Tucker · 10 Comments
When you wish to learn to drive, you have a choice of taking your driving lessons in Sheffield in a manual or automatic car.
If you do pass your driving test in an automatic vehicle though, you will need to bare in mind that you will not be able to drive a manual car with that licence (UK). If however, you pass your test in a manual car, you are entitled to drive an automatic car.
A manual car has gears and three foot operated pedals. You have to change up and down the gears yourself at the appropriate time.
An automatic car has an automatic gearbox that will change the gears for you and only two foot pedals (accelerator & brake). This makes learning in an automatic car a popular choice by those learners who find it difficult to co-ordinate the gears and clutch whilst driving a manual car. Older or disabled learner drivers often find an automatic vehicle easier also.
The vast majority of people tend to learn to drive in a manual car. As a result, there are far more driving instructors in Sheffield and driving schools in Sheffield who teach in manual cars than in automatic cars. It may be more difficult therefore to find a driving instructor or driving school that undertake automatic lessons. These lessons are often more expensive also.
In the early stages of driving, it may seem easier to not have to worry about gears and the clutch pedal but most people have few problems mastering them after a suitable number of hours training and practice. Given the extra variety of vehicles that you can drive after passing your driving test in a manual car, it does make sense to persevere with your manual driving lessons even if you end up driving an automatic car subsequently.
