Building Your Chicken Coop

January 5, 2010 by · 3 Comments

If you are thinking about constructing a chicken coop, the needs of the chickens, nearby predators and your climate will define the construction of your coop. So it is critical to get chicken coop plans that are specific to your situation.

Chicken coops are a fantastic family project. When constructed near a home, chicken coop designs can be small charming structures, with fanciful decorative touches in a style that matches your taste. Often, chicken coops can be less space intenstive than dog runs, so that a big area is not required. Feeding is easy too, as feed usually consists of vegetarian table scraps and seed. Really, the food needed is very similar to what you’d find in most bird feeders.

Another thing to consider is that chicken coops are a great idea if you are thinking of an extra income. All you need is the desire to raise chickens and of course a small area in your backyard.

You should think of your chicken coops as a retreats for your chickens, where hens can breed as well as lay eggs and set the chicken house plans accordingly. Typically, just like a fancy hotel for people, the chicken coop is usually accompanied by an open-area, or space called a “run.”

The cool thing is that chicken coops are popping up everywhere even in big cities like Houston, and Dallas. Building a chicken coop and having chickens is a great way to have fresh eggs year round. Not only that, but raising your own food promotes sustainable living and teachs your children responsibility. Chickens are also a great source for entertainment.

Home Security Advice

January 2, 2010 by · 11 Comments

When the topic of home security springs to mind, most people seem to think of burglar alarms and little to nothing else. Alarms can be a great way to protect your home, although they are only a small part of what makes up an effective home security system. Burglar alarms are a key to protecting your home – although there are other things you’ll need as well.

Believe it or not, the windows are actually the key to home security. Homes that have poor constructed windows tend to get broken into a lot more than homes with secure and sturdy windows. When you are dealing with your windows, you should make sure that you have tough glass and locks that fit to the windows. When you are away from home, you should always make sure that your windows are locked. Even though some windows may be hard to reach, you should always lock them. Burglars make a living out of stealing – and they will normally find a way in if they see the opening.

Along with the windows, doors are also known to be a weakness of security around the home. Doors should always be strong and sturdy, complete with tough locks that aren’t easy to force open. If you have a spare key, you should be careful where you leave it. Losing your keys can also make you a target, especially if you have anything on your key ring that reveals your home address.

To better protect their homes, most people choose to invest in a home surveillance system. These systems are great for monitoring the home, as they can record video and keep it stored for you to view later. If you travel a lot, a home surveillance system can be an ideal way to keep a check on your home while you’re away.

Guard dogs are also common with home security as well. A guard dog can protect your home from burglars, thieves, and other types of trouble. Guard dogs can be very handy to have around, as most dogs are more than capable of scaring away trouble with their bark. The only downside to guard dogs is the fact that you’ll need to train them and ensure that they always have food and water.

Last, but certainly not least are burglar alarms. Burglar alarms can be effective to an extent, although they are primarily good for scaring thieves away. If you put an alarm in a visible location from the outside of the home, most burglars won’t even attempt to enter your home. Even though burglar alarms are great for scaring off thieves – you’ll still need to have other areas of your home safe and secure as well to get the most of your home security.

It’s probally best to have greater home security measures in place before you look for American home insurance or American homeowners insurance quotes from your American home insurance company

How To Save Money By Making Your Own Biodiesel At Home

December 15, 2009 by · 12 Comments

The recent rises in petrol and diesel prices at the gas station forecourts has been astonishing. Every day when I drove past my local supermarket, the price had gone up by another 1, 2 or 3p per litre. Although it has now fallen back from the highest price of 132.9 pence per litre (that is about $12 per gallon!), it still means that my husband and I do not drive as much as we used to. And the kids are unhappy because we cannot afford as many days out at weekends.

Now I have a friend called Mark who likes to mess around with cars. I know that he converted one of his cars to run on LPG (liquid petroleum gas)some time ago, so I asked him for his advice about how we could fuel our diesel estate car more economically. That is when he told me about biodiesel.

It seems that he has been making biodiesel at home for the best part of 10 years! And he can produce it for around 45p (90c) per gallon. No – that is not a misprint!

He told me that it is very easy to make biodiesel from vegetable oil – the same stuff that you use for cooking. He collects waste cooking oil from several of our local fish & chip shops, and fast-food restaurants every 2-3 weeks. Most of them give the waste vegetable oil to him for nothing (they are glad to get rid of it), and a couple even pay him to take it away!

It takes a few hours over a weekend to “brew” a batch of biodiesel (he usually makes about 200 litres/44 gallons at a time) and then he just puts it in his car. His car has not required and modifications to run on biodiesel and it does not cause any problems. The only thing you notice is that his exhaust smells like fish & chips!

He has now produced a detailed, step-by-step guide ‘How To Make Biodiesel At Home Easily & Cheaply‘ that is selling like hot cakes on the Internet.

My husband is going to have a go next weekend, so I will keep you posted to let you know how he gets on.

Capstar to kill fleas on dogs and cats

December 12, 2009 by · 16 Comments

There is a new product on the market to take care of fleas. Although it is not a cure-all, it certainly does have its place. Advantage for Cats and Dogs and Frontline for cats both are excellent products, but they cannot be used for tiny puppies, for instance. Contrary to both Advantage and Frontline, Capstar can be used on puppies and kittens down to four weeks of age and as small as two pounds. It appears to have an enormous margin of safety. The same dosage can be used on tiny puppies down to 2 pounds or dogs up to 25 pounds, and a second dosage is used for dogs from 26 all the way up to 125 pounds. That is from a five to 12 fold variation in the dosage.

It is safe, and it is effective. Fully 90% of the fleas will be dead within a couple of hours.

CAPSTAR is an oral tablet. A single dose should kill the adult fleas on your pet. If your pet gets re-infested with fleas, you can safely give another dose as often as once per day. Be sure to buy enough to be able to treat several different days as you get your fleas under control.

To give CAPSTAR Tablets, place the pill directly in the back of your pet’s tongue or hide it in his food. If you hide the pill in food, watch closely to make sure your pet actaully ate it. If you are not sure that your pet took the pill, it is actually safe to give a second pill.

You have to treat all of the pets in the household. Fleas can reproduce on untreated pets and allow infestations to persist. If you have treated the house and yard with an Insect Growth Regulator, the development of new fleas will be over with in less than two weeks.

Capstar for small dogs is used to kill adult fleas on the dogs and cats. The fleas on your pet are in the adult stage. An adult female flea, living on a pet, can lay up to 2,000 eggs in her lifetime. With CAPSTAR, you can kill the adult fleas stopping them from having time to reproduce.

San Pedro de Alcantara

San Pedro de Alcantara

San Pedro de Alcantara, referred to locally as San Pedro, is a small Spanish town just a few minutes from the renowned Puerto Banus and a 15 minute drive from the center of Marbella and its airport. San Pedro de Alcantara is a tourist haven for Europeans of every nationality especially the British as well as German and Scandinavians. During the busy high season holiday months of July, August and September, San Pedro de Alcantara’s population of around 40,000 can literally double in size.

San Pedro de Alcantara Feria

The San Pedro de Alcantara Feria, the last of the summer fiestas on the Costa del Sol, is a very Spanish affair where people from nearby towns as well as throughout mainland Spain join the local residents with their celebrations. Tradition dictates that this celebration is accompanied with a great deal of noise, fireworks, laughter and singing as well as the consumption of copious amounts of alcohol and fine food. Although the San Pedro de Alcantara Feria falls in October, which is outside the normal tourist season, this is the best time to visit if you truly wish to experience ‘authentic’ Spain.

Calle Marques del Duero

The now pedestrianised Calle Marques del Duero, which leads to church square and the beautiful 17th centaury Franciscan church, forms the main shopping thoroughfare. Here you can find a wide range of shops, restaurants, cafes, bodegas and bars where you can quench your thirst or satisfy your hunger. Leading off Calle Marques del Duero are numerous winding streets containing shops and restaurants in traditional whitewashed Andalucian style.

Beach Front and Promenade

San Pedro de Alcantara’s beach front and promenade restaurants have been patronised with celebrities that include the late Princess Diana and Bruce Willis. The fine food and stunning Mediterranean Sea views and of course the beach makes this one of the most very popular areas in San Pedro.

There are some things to remember if you are out for a stroll in San Pedro, firstly be aware that most shops will close during siesta time (14.00 until 16.00 approx) and shops close around 14.00 on a Saturday and do not open again until Monday. Also, locals tend to dine late, so don’t be surprised when the local restaurants and bodegas start to get busy around 11pm.

How to Increase Your Metabolism

How to Increase Your Metabolism

Do you find it hard to lose weight and keep it off?  As we get older it gets even harder, which is a sign that we need to increase our metabolism. The food that we eat converts into energy, and the word ‘metabolism’ refers to the process that the body uses to distribute the nutrients from the food. Our basal metabolism keeps us alive and provides basic energy for life support, which requires 60-65% of the calories eaten daily. An additional 25% of calories are used during physical activity and another 10% are spent processing the food we eat. Everyone’s rate of and ability to increase metabolism is different and is affected by many variables including general health, chronic health conditions, lack of physical activity, and age. We’ve all seen those people who can eat anything they want and never seem to gain an ounce, regardless of their level of physical activity; this is a prime example of a person with a relatively high metabolic rate.

According to various sources, a winning formula to maintain weight is to take in a number of calories equal to the amount used on a daily basis. To lose weight and increase metabolism, simply reduce the number of calories taken in, increase calories expended, or do both for better, faster results. Muscle burns more calories than fat, which is why it’s important to include weight or resistance training with aerobic exercise. Increasing the heart rate can increase metabolism while exercising and also boosts resting metabolism for several hours afterward; that’s why is a good idea to exercise before the biggest meal of the day. Eating high-quality protein, fresh fruits and vegetables, and high-fiber grains will also give metabolism a boost. It is possible to maintain your ideal weight without dieting; just increase your metabolism and live healthy.

Boost your metabolism and you will burn fat 24/7! People who exercise on a regular basis can eat more without gaining weight because they expend more calories throughout the day than someone who doesn’t. Eating three small meals every day in addition to exercise will keep metabolism up and your weight down. Skipping meals isn’t an option either, because this only lowers the metabolic rate. Everyone can benefit from a healthy diet and exercise, and it’s a proven fact that thinner people tend to metabolize food more quickly, so with each pound of body fat shed, subsequent pounds come off faster to increase metabolism. Age is also a factor that works against us, which is why it’s even more important to eat right and stay active. Take care of you body and it will return the favor.

November 13, 2009 by · 1 Comment

For most novice new parents, parenting is a journey to becoming a guide and a portal of strength for the children. Yet in reality, parenting being a mother is more than that; actually more than what anyone could ever imagine. The ins and outs of being a parent are not confounded restricted entirely in a single theory or story of parenthood. There is more to a single parenting experience as the role is complex complicated and meaningful.

As parents, we go beyond the mere source provider of food, clothing and shelter. The physical need is just one of the many roles tasks we need to comply with. Aside from working hard to support raise our children, we also have to act as moral role models and icons of good attitudes for them to become better individuals. As we endow our children toddlers with the requisites of becoming a good person, we allow them the chance for a good life in the years ahead.

Education is one good thing we could have our children inherit learn from as. Again, as parents, it is not enough that we send our children learn Chinese good schools and buy them school things for their school works and daily activities tasks. Baby learns Chinese begins kicks off at home and we are our children’s first teachers. The numbers, the alphabet and the colors are just basic flashcard concepts parents are expected estimated to teach their children. Much more than that, we share life ideas views and make them learn from our stories of life and how we got through its trials in the past. We are also supposed to inculcate instill values and beliefs which they will hold their lifetime.

Parenting is a complexity of roles that is why our parents have never failed to remind repeat us that we need to be prepared before we decide to become parents. Child-rearing raising a family is an achievement which we must work hard for beyond monetary and physical support. When we enter parenthood, we transform redirect our lives into molding other lives and we become portals models of a journey towards the significant existence of our children.
