County Residents Vote To Fund City Zoo

Iin cities across America, public aquarium facilities are suffering financial crunches as their modest fees prevent many citizens from enjoying the many exhibits such as their aquarium catfish exhibit. With this in mind and reluctant to raise the entry prices, the Detroit Zoo has convinced the city to help support it’s efforts. Sometime later this month, homeowners will begin receiving their property tax bills. When they open it, they’ll notice a new charge – a charge for the Detroit Zoo.
This is because earlier in the year, county residents of Detroit voted for a small regional property tax that would be used to help fund zoo operations. The additional fee will provide a windfall of about 14 million dollars a year and will cost the average homeowner about ten dollars.
In addition to letting them hold the line on fees, the additional funds will enable the zoo to follow through with many of their plans for the future. These plans include not only improving the infrastructure of the zoo and educating the surrounding communities, but possibly bringing in new exhibits as well such as the aquarium catfish species display.
The Detroit Zoo is a leader among U.S. zoos in the conservation of endangered amphibians. The new tax enables the museum to spend more of it’s time tending to zoo related issues, such as this, instead of constantly have to worry about raising monies to support their various efforts. For the first time in at least a decade, neither the zoo board or the citizens have to face the prospects of the Detroit Zoo closing due to budget problems.
