For a good ranking in search engines especially in Google links from other websites to the own site are very essential. It is for sure not bad to know something about the special kinds of Links.

If you find a site with witch you want to exchange links contact the webmaster and offer him a link from your website. If he agrees you obtain a backlink from his site to your site. Those links are reciprocal links or Two Way Links. Keep in mind to ask for a link from related sites, they are more important to Google. Look for links from your competitors, they are most related. Two Way Links don’t boost your ranking significantly in Google, certainly they are better than no links. What Google likes are One Way Links. Thats a link pointing from the other website to your site, and you don’t link back to the other site. You can get such links from web directories. But they are not very important for search engines. Because they are very related, One Way Links from your competitors would be again the best. But no one wants to link to your site and get nothing in return.

However if you have two partners B and C, you can proceed differently. You (A) link to B and B doesn’t link back to you (that would be reciprocal) he links to C. C then links to A. All are linked in a triangle: A -> B -> C -> A. Everybody gets an incoming link, but for which there is no direct outgoing link.
