Really, Microsoft should've licensed a design from Archos, not Toshiba.
Microsoft can position itself as a video provider of TV to DVR to pocket solutions. Media Center beats the ITV prototype for now, because it also records TV. Being able to put recorded TV from a Media Center right onto your Archos portable AV500 or AV604 makes a great deal of sense.
Also, the Archos video models are very different in size and shape than Apple's iPod. Microsoft needs to differentiate what it's offering; an iPod-like competitor is going to be an also-ran.
